Work experience - Photography and styling

Tuesday 1st March 2011

Pennard House - designed by Hyde and Hyde architects

A Grand Design Magazine photo shoot.

Photos of the house taken by Hyde and Hyde

I recently had a brilliant opportunity to travel down to the Gower with stylist and writer Nicola Wilks and photographer Matt Cant. The architecture of the house was amazing and looking around the house was brilliant. It was a long day starting at 5.45am and not finishing until 7pm (including travel time). I got really involved throughout the day and thoroughly enjoyed the experience. In addition I could see how freelance photographers, stylers and writers worked first hand, it is hard work!  I leant a lot about the technical side of photography, in particular lighting. It also sparked an interest in styling, which I hadn't thought about before. Dressing the house and setting up the shots required a lot more work than you might think from the finished photo. It was also important to style the photos in a way the client (Grand Designs Magazine) would like and that would fit in with the rest of the magazine. It was interesting to hear how the taste of different magazines varied so much even in the small sphere of interiors and home styling.

Innovative advertising

Both made me smile... Really unusual and quirky ideas. The Bottom one in particular stresses the trust they have in their own product.
